ABOUT ABOUT

As part of our Perseids Meteor Shower Campout and Member Appreciation Event, we are happy to provide for our members this unique opportunity to enjoy a Nature Walk at Fly Ranch and it's iconic Fly Geyser with Friends of Black Rock Staff and Board Members at a discounted rate reserved only for our members and their families (20% off standard ticket price). The proceeds for this Nature Walk will help to offset the costs of our Perseids Campout, so your participation is very much appreciated!

We will begin to gather at the Perseids Campout Location (roughly six miles north of the 12-Mile Playa Access Point, near the shoreline) starting at 9am. We will then caravan together to Fly Ranch, making a quick stop at the 12-Mile Playa Access Point to pick up any additional participants who may not be at camp at 9:30am. We will then arrive at Fly Ranch to start the tour at 10am, lasting until 1pm. We will provide ice water, umbrellas, and the opportunity for shade at various points throughout the tour to help combat the heat. Please come prepared with a water bottle, sunscreen and sun-protective clothing/hat.

About Fly Geyser:

Friends of Black Rock-High Rock offers this roughly 3-hour Nature Walk in partnership with the Burning Man Project. Explore two distinct portions of the stunning 3,800-acre property. To the south, we will visit an area of the ranch where Burning Man art can be seen and you'll learn about the area and land use. To the north, we visit wetlands, see wildlife, and several geothermal wonders.  There are three geysers on the property including the stunning Fly Geyser, a unique and iconic geothermal geyser that constantly sprays, depositing minerals, and enabling the growth of multi-colored algae on its surrounding natural terraces.

The walks are an immersive experience in a changing and dynamic environment. It is not uncommon to see wild horses, jackrabbits, coyotes and other wildlife.

About the Walks:

Participants are guided by knowledgeable Docents. The total walk length is approximately 3 miles on uneven ground. Sturdy close-toed shoes are recommended. Bring water, wear layers, be prepared for changing weather from day to day. We encourage hats, sunscreen, long sleeves and pants, or any preferred forms of sun protection.

Participants will meet on playa near the Perseids Campout Location starting at 9am or at the 12 Mile Playa Access Point at 9:30am on Saturday, August, 10th.

Pets are not allowed and may not be left in vehicles. In addition, if you or someone in your group has mobility issues, please let us know ahead of time so that we can better accommodate those who may have trouble making the entire walk.

Supporting non-profit work:

Both the Fly Ranch Project and Friends of Black Rock-High Rock are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Tickets for this experience are donation-based. Your donations help us continue to offer Nature Walks and fulfill our nonprofit missions. We could not do this without your support.
